Finding Your Purpose In God, On Purpose

By M.J. Andre

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope”

The Scriptures tell us that God the father had an eternal purpose that He accomplished through Jesus-Christ (Ephesians 3:11) but, this purpose cost Him dearly, because He had to send His only begotten son to us to accomplish what He alone could get done. Christ also had a purpose which He accomplished by coming to us in the form of a baby in a manger, He left His Throne in Heaven, He was stripped of all His glory and riches and made Himself of no importance at all. His purpose was to reconcile us to the father through His death on the cross.

Joseph, to accomplish his purpose was first sold as slave, he lost complete contact with his dad and his beloved brother Benjamin, accused unjustly and imprisoned. But, by the grace of God, he fulfilled his purpose and gave the Israelites roots in Egypt like God planned it.  David had a purpose, but he spent years running away from Saul trying to avoid being killed by Him. The apostle Paul who was born and groomed solely to bring the gospel to the gentiles, found his purpose at a later time in life, but when he found it, he gave it all that he had. His trials and pains are all documented for us throughout the whole New Testament.

Finding and living our purpose is not a fluke. We have to stop running away from Him, stop trying to do it on our own, take a stand and join Him in the process. Finding our purpose is something that is already predetermined by God even before we were born. No matter how anyone of us ends up being born, whether we were wanted by our parents or not, are all irrelevant.

God has a specific plan and purpose for you with your name on it. By ourselves we are incapable of finding out our purposes and all our doings without Him, are meaningless Ecclesiastes 1: 2 tells us “Meaningless! Meaningless! Utterly meaningless!  Everything is meaningless!” – Living this life without ever accomplishing our true purpose is truly meaningless. We can start by trusting Him to lead us there, trust His judgment, His kindness, His timing, His love, His wisdom and His power. Above all else we have to believe and like Job who bowed down to Him in Job 42:2 and said: “I know that You can do all things; no plan of Yours can be thwarted.”  We need to trust and obey.

This holiday season, let’s take a stand to obey Him and stop following our own will and plans. The truth is, if we do not make a deliberate choice to go forward with Him into finding this life we have in Him, we might end up finding the hard way that we lived this life on earth, in vain. Since the chief mandate of man is to glorify Him, we can start right now. We start by living purposefully with Him in mind.

a) Let’s start praying for our loved ones, for God to help us become obedient people. Start praying God to put holy hunger for Him int our hearts.

b) When we have a full day ahead of us, we can start by waking up thirty minutes earlier just to spend more time with Him. Beloved, you have no idea how much God delights in us when we make those small sacrifices to spend more time with Him.

c) Another thing we can do is to start reminding ourselves, even if we are at work, no matter how busy it gets, we can take 5 to 10 minutes to think about Him and communicate with Him. It does not have to be a big deal but it will allow us to train ourselves to think of Him. While it might be hard at first and sometimes we might forget, we pick up right where we left off; the goal here is to learn to live a life where He stops being an afterthought.

d) We can also make an effort while we are doing household chores, driving the car, walking to the grocery etc., to pray, or meditate on His Word or simply talk to Him like you would talk to your daddy.

Start by choosing one of these suggestions here, and put it into practice with all your heart and with one goal in mind, improving your relationship with Him. Before you know, it will take a life on its own.  Let’s make 2013 a truly different year!

Happy Holidays
