The Serpent Beguiled Eve by Acacia Slaton is a book that remains in the heart and brings about much discussion. My husband and I had a lengthy talk about the book and Acacia’s experience as a woman deceived by a man who used her love as a cover for his homosexual lifestyle. It’s not easy to read or talk about, but we can’t overlook the author’s message and experience! She's armed and empowered us to help others who might be walking into the same web of deception as she did.
I have to admit that I cried at the end of Acacia's book, but not because I felt sorry for the pain she had to endure. She's not the kind of woman who wants or needs pity because she has Jesus! What touched me was the pureness of her heart to take responsibility for change to live God's will at a time when she could have given up on God and life.
I don't think Acacia sees the strength of her love because it's obvious that she's still healing, but it's ever powerful from chapter to chapter. It’s easy to fall in love with her and feel her pain. Where she lived through patches of insecurity and self-loathing because of her husband's deceptions, I saw a very young, but mature woman who at all times worked hard to insure that her children and family didn't suffer as she was suffering. As an older woman, I've learned so much from Acacia concerning trusting God, but I also see so much hope for her experience and suffering helping many young women or men put God first when considering marriage in order to avoid unnecessary trials.
While Acacia didn't get the opportunity to choose whether or not she wanted to be married to a man who preferred having sex with men over women, she used her experience to draw closer to God and her family. So even though the book is about her life experience, there is much Christian teaching, faith and understanding based upon scripture that will help believers going through difficult times.
The Serpent Beguiled Eve is filled with great insight and the strength needed to live with a husband who lied more than he told the truth and who allowed his wife to feel all the pain and shame of his sin while he arrogantly led a double life. If you want to understand God’s forgiveness and love, it abounds throughout Acacia's writing. In the midst of all her pain she has forgiven her ex-husband and has given him every opportunity to look to God for healing and renewal. However, the main theme speaks loud and clear that to be a true Christian we must center upon God’s will and guidance over our own desires in order to avoid being deceived!
